✍️ Local Insight

Sister Islands — The Short Flight That Connects Two Worlds

St. Thomas and St. Croix are both US Virgin Islands, but they feel like entirely different places. STT is hilly, harbor-facing, cruise-ship busy, and tourism-dense. STX is flatter, greener, quieter, and spread across 84 square miles of farmland, rainforest, and reef. The 25-mile flight between them takes under 30 minutes — and crosses what residents on both islands half-jokingly call the biggest cultural divide in the Caribbean.

Cape Air and Silver Airways operate the STT–STX route daily on small aircraft, with multiple departures. Because Cyril E. King and Henry E. Rohlsen Airport are both compact operations, the experience is efficient: arrive 45 minutes before departure, walk to the aircraft, and you're wheels-up quickly. No long queues, no jet bridges. It's about as close to private aviation as commercial flying gets.

The reasons to make the trip are many. St. Croix has some of the best scuba diving in the Caribbean — Cane Bay Wall is a world-class dive site. Christiansted and Frederiksted are walkable, historic, and genuinely charming. The food scene is excellent and unhurried. Visitors who make it to STX often say it's the USVI they didn't know they were looking for — all the beauty, less of the crowd. The short flight makes it easy to add a few nights as an extension to any St. Thomas trip.
