💡 Insider Tips
Arrive 2 hours early for domestic flights, 3 hours for international. Security lines back up during the morning rush (6–9 AM). The terminal is small with limited seating so don't cut it close.
🚗
Drive on the LEFT. The USVI uses left-hand traffic — same as the British Virgin Islands. This surprises many mainland US visitors. Take it slow on hilly and narrow roads.
🚕
Taxis are shared rides at fixed per-person rates. The driver will wait to fill the van before departing. If you want a private ride, ask for a "private charter" and expect to pay the full van rate.
🛂
US citizens do not need a passport for mainland US flights. The USVI is a US territory — travel is treated as domestic. A valid government-issued ID is sufficient. However a passport is recommended for flexibility.
💧
Stay hydrated. The Caribbean heat hits hard when you step off the plane. Grab water before leaving the terminal — it's cheaper inside than at most shops in town.
📱
US cell carriers work normally in the USVI. No roaming charges for most US plans. If you're visiting from abroad, pick up an eSIM before you land for the best rates.
🌧️
Afternoon thunderstorms are common June–November. They pass quickly but can cause short delays. Check the live flight board on FlySTT before heading to the airport.
STT Airport FAQ
US citizens flying from the continental US do not need a passport for STT. The U.S. Virgin Islands is a US territory, so travel is treated as domestic. A driver's license or other government-issued ID is sufficient. Non-US citizens should check visa requirements. A passport is always recommended for broader travel flexibility.
No. Uber and Lyft do not operate in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Ground transportation is via government-regulated taxis and safari vans, rental cars, or private car arrangements. Taxis queue outside baggage claim — fares are fixed per person and posted on official rate cards. See our USVI Taxi Guide for all rates.
The airport is about 20 minutes from Magens Bay (one of the most beautiful beaches in the world) and about 10 minutes from Charlotte Amalie. Coki Beach is about 20 minutes away. Most beach areas are a short taxi ride from the terminal.
Take a taxi from the airport to Red Hook (~20 min, $11/person), then board the ferry to Cruz Bay, St. John (~20 min crossing, ~$7 each way). Ferries run regularly from early morning to midnight. See our St. John Ferry Guide for full schedules.
Peak season is December through April — dry, cooler, and the most flights are operating. May and June offer great value with fewer crowds. Hurricane season runs July through November; September and October are the most active months but travel is still possible with flexibility. The weather is warm year-round (75–90°F).
No dedicated airline lounges at STT. The terminal is relatively small. There is a bar/restaurant post-security for drinks and light food. If you have lounge access through a credit card program, it unfortunately does not apply at STT.
