Island Packing Is Different

A USVI trip doesn't require heavy luggage. The weather is warm, the dress code is relaxed, and everything you genuinely need fits in a smaller bag than most people pack. The question isn't whether to pack light — it's whether to pay for a checked bag at all.

The Case for Carry-On Only

For trips of 4–7 days, a well-organized carry-on and personal item cover almost everything a USVI trip requires. Swimwear, a few light outfits, one nicer outfit for dinner, sandals and one pair of walking shoes — it's all doable in a standard roller bag.

The benefits are real: no baggage fees, no waiting at baggage claim in a hot terminal, and no risk of your bag going to San Juan while you land in St. Thomas.

When a Checked Bag Makes Sense

Longer trips (10+ days), travelers with children, snorkeling or dive gear, or anyone planning to bring back a meaningful amount of duty-free goods will want a checked bag. USVI travelers are entitled to an $1,600 duty-free allowance (double the standard $800) — room to bring back rum, art, or jewelry.

Bag Fee Reality Check

On JetBlue, American, Delta, and United, checked bag fees typically run $35–$40 for the first bag each way — $70–$80 round trip. If you have elite status or a co-branded airline credit card, these fees are often waived. Budget carriers like Spirit and Frontier charge for carry-ons too, flipping the math entirely.

What to Always Pack in Your Carry-On

Regardless of whether you check a bag, keep the essentials with you: prescription medications, valuables, your first night's clothing, any electronics, and your travel documents. Island-bound flights occasionally have checked bag delays — having what you need for 24 hours in your carry-on is good insurance.

USVI-Specific Packing Notes

Sunscreen is dramatically cheaper on the mainland than in St. Thomas — bring more than you think you need. Reef-safe formulas are strongly encouraged in the USVI's marine environment. A reusable water bottle is worth packing; hydration matters in the Caribbean heat.
